Chances are you have heard of the Contemporary Smooth Jazz group Freeport as they are regulars at festivals, top venues and notable events. Recently they have shared the stage with sophomoric artists, legends and Grammy award winners in the jazz community such as Bob James, Marion Meadows, Joyce Cooling, Paul Brown, Nils, Bob Baldwin, Matt Marshak, Dee Lucas, and the list goes on. Some past highlights have been recording and performing with Tower Of Power, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Special EFX, and Grover Washington Jr. and the list goes on.
Marvill states “there are no self-imposed limits within the band. Our performances are always fresh not knowing what influence will creep into that particular song. Our arrangements and performances are impacted by dynamic changes and influences from all styles of jazz. In fact, what we hear most is the enjoyment of these influences we apply in our songs." This infusion helps with communicating and connecting to the audience. Freeport pays close attention to how and what the audience reacts to and in turn providing them exactly what they want at the same time not forgiving musical exploration and feel.

Bassist Scott Marvill, the founding member of Freeport, is originally from Philadelphia, PA. In his twenties, he found himself attending Combs College of Music, playing gigs, teaching guitar and bass, traveling and being a session man mainly at Ridge Sound Studios in Philly. He worked with numerous acts such as The Temptations, Four Tops, Grover Washington Jr, Leslie Gore, The Dovells, and most of the touring oldies acts in the 1980s. With a friend he started Freeport in 1981 and found themselves opening for Tower Of Power, The Temptations, Special EFX and other national acts. Freeport continues today.
Steve Thornton, a well known musician in the local music scene, joined Freeport in April 2007. He found woodwinds at a very early age. He plays just about every other instrument known to man. These days he is focused on the sax but do not be surprised if he picks up a guitar, a bass, or plays some keyboards.
Name a style of music and has performed it. Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Classical, Reggae. This experience has bled into his playing creating an exploration of melodies and solos not found in other musicians. A very soulful, appropriate, inquisitive, and smooth approach to performing.
Jo Daniels is no stranger to the entertainment world via TV, radio, and performing many styles of music. From Cincinnati, Ohio Jo came to North Carolina at a young age. He finished a B.S. in Music Education and more recently a Masters in Educational. He is a former Professor of Commercial Music classes and online music classes at Winston Salem State University. He was the Conductor/Arranger for the original National Black Theatre in 1984 with Larry Hamlin.
He found himself living and touring in France, Belgium and Africa . Additionally he released three CDs on the JWP International label. His works are publishes through Jo-Wee Publishing and ASCAP.
Hailing from Niagara Falls, NY, Tony learned to play the drums/percussion at age 5! He was schooled through many forms of study from some of the greatest instructors in the Up-State New York Jazz Communit. Tony continues to spur his musical growth through Study, performance and studio work.
His musical path has taken him from New York City, to Seattle, to Texas, and now settled in central North Carolina.

"After The Rain"
I wanted to write this review/overview of our first nationally released single because I thought it would mean more coming from us and help explain what you are hearing. Jazz is a broad term. It is the broadness that we embrace and apply to our material.
Too often artists will produced material with targeted markets in sight while perhaps not truly feeling that niche. We chose to simply play what we feel drawing from different regional influences, styles and approaches. With origins like Philly, New York, Ohio and North Carolina there is a wide influence of input towards our music. Some of us were raised on big bands while others found Soul to be their calling. What ever happens in the studio and at live performances is real and true.
I throw the term "Contemporary" around in lieu of the more known sheik "Smooth Jazz" because of our free and open approach to the music. It's what we feel, what we think, and who we are now.
Enjoy!!
Smooth Jazz Artist "Freeport" releases their second CD capturing eleven songs displaying their current approach to some contemporary jazz classics, some less known adventurous songs, and interpretations of the marriage of R&B and jazz. Steve Thornton, who rarely works with a script, is steering his saxes and flute exploring melodies and solos with the approach left only to those that have been performing jazz for 40 years.
You can tell Malik Graham, on keyboards, really enjoyed the hours spent layering sounds and keyboards intertwining sounds and styles. Scott Marvill, basses and guitars, was thrown in to rethinking the guitar's approach to Smooth Jazz. He brushed off the dust and found himself reunited with the instrument that introduced him to jazz almost 40 years ago.
On drums Herman Sanders brings the combined feel of jazz, church, and R&B which lays down a foundation of feel that the other players build and ride on. This is one CD not to be missed.
